Justification for Mobile Public Safety Network

Public safety agencies, such as police and fire departments need fast and reliable access to information. Critical information such as reports, criminal profiles and real-time video require higher data transfer speeds then traditional wireless solutions can provide. Traditional system speeds of less than 19.2kbps are not enough to support officers and firemen in the field. Cellular solutions (like CDMA, CDCP and 1xRTT) result in significant recurring costs to the agencies for each user.

The Alvarion 900MHz mobile solution provides up to 3Mbps per terminal which is more than enough bandwidth to support simultaneous VoIP, real-time video and data applications including RMS, mug shots, finger prints, warrant requests, Alerts and NCIC lookups. Integrated with the agencies networks the police cars and emergency response vehicles are transformed into true “mobile offices” allowing police officers to spend more time on the streets. Some agencies have shown that the mobile office solution has increased officer’s street time by more than 2 hours per shift.

The 900MHz system allows for radio cells that, can range up to several miles, allowing cost-effective coverage of vast geographic areas. We use visual site surveys as well as computerized data mapping to define the proper equipment and placement for maximum coverage of a service area.

Some municipalities have attempted to use 802.11b/g or “WiFi” based solutions to provide broadband connectivity to vehicles and have found this technology unreliable, unsecured and unmanageable. This concept can require a large number of access points to cover a small municipality, resulting in a costly and unmanageable system with many points of failure.

WiFi or 802.11b/g networks face a tremendous amount of self interference and interference from the ever growing amount of public and private “hotspots” and residential routers all using the crowded 2.4GHz band.

The Alvarion 900MHz mobile solution is very interference resilient and very secure. We are able to build networks in almost any topographical condition and environment and provide a greater coverage area with fewer radios than competing technologies. Line of site and no-line of sight installations are possible to provide coverage where needed.

All the mobile equipment is mounted in a NEMA box and tested to take the daily wear and tear of an automobile or truck rolling through town or country. The equipment is powered by the standard 12V power commonly find is automobiles so no special power source is required.
